The HMS Prince of Wales is one of the most powerful surface warships ever constructed in the UK. Able to move 500 miles per day, the versatile aircraft carrier helps deliver carrier strike missions, enforces no flight zones, and aids the Royal Navy forces both at home and abroad.
The Prince of Wales boasts a flight deck of 70 metres wide and 280 metres long – enough space for three football pitches! She also holds 45 days’ worth of food in stores to feed minimum crew of 700, which increases to around 1,600 with aircraft onboard. Her size and scope are breathtaking – she can embark 36 F-3SB and 4 Merlin Helicopters.
Beyond Property’s Managing Director, Chris Hyde, was fortunate enough to attend an access all areas invitation on board in Plymouth. The invitation was extended by his god daughter, whom is a Sea Spec on board.
Chris also had the privilege of meeting Captain Steve Higham, who has been in the Royal Navy since 1997 after studying law and international law at Cambridge University. Captain Higham was awarded the OBE in the operational honours in April 2017 due to his command of the destroyer HMS Defender, which supported US Special Forces and French Aircraft Carriers in carrying out strikes against Da’esh. Prior to commanding the HMS Prince of Wales, he worked as the National Security Advisor, before becoming Theresa May’s Military Assistant. In August 2019, Captain Higham was given the additional role of Private Secretary by Boris Johnson.
Captain Higham’s experience and skills are beyond inspirational and show the importance of strong leadership.
The awe-inspiring guided tour was an experience that will never be forgotten and gave Chris time to reflect on the millions of hours invested, and the thousands, upon thousands of individual skillsets required to create such an amazing ship.
Hundreds of departments, crew members, and internal communications are in place to ensure the safety and success of the vessel. This is embedded within the ethos of the Beyond brand during the growth and expansion of the business.
